the problem
the 'misfits'
Wild horses hold a special place in the mythos of the American West, with images of free-roaming herds of mustangs grazing on vast public rangelands.
Wild Horse is an icon of the American West that deserves better protection

animal cruelty
the definition
There are over 100,000 wild horses and burros on 26.9 million acres of BLM land, according to the agency. This doesn’t include mustangs on Native American reservations, national parks, several U.S. Forest Service territories and lands managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

financial inequality
the 'l' factor
The legislation that established management policies for equids in western North America (Wild
Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971)
deemed free-roaming equids an integral part of
the natural system of public lands. Horse numbers rose sharply after enactment of the 1971 act
that afforded horses and burros strong protection
on BLM and USFS lands (Wagner 1983, United
States Departments of Agriculture and the Interior 1997c).
BLM is required by law to manage wild horse and burro populations in a way that it deems sustainable for the horses, the burros, the public lands they live on, and the ecosystem they inhabit.

legal contstraints
the solution
According to Ross MacPhee, a paleomammalogist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York who has studied the origins of wild horses, the only solution is to create special land preserves similar to those that protect the bison herds at Yellowstone National Park.

“You occasionally see one, and it’s the thrill of a lifetime. But mostly all you ever see is a cloud of dust after they are gone. It’s their stubborn ability to survive that makes them so remarkable.”
